Panel Session: Building trust in research libraries through Citizen Science

The panel discussion will address themes of LIBER 2020 on securing trust in libraries, information and research integrity, leadership as well as the impact of libraries.

Session Description

The need for science and innovation to contribute to solving local and global issues requires societal trust in science, and accordingly in research libraries.
Although confidence in science remains high, there are serious and rapidly changing challenges, such as Fake News, post-factual tendencies, climate change, and e.g. distrust in medical research.

The potential value of involving citizens in the conduct of science is high. It can improve scientific literacy, public understanding of science and the scientific method, and it can advance knowledge and innovation in ways previously inaccessible to academic, government, or industrial research organizations. [1]

Citizen Science seeks the inclusion in and contributions from citizens in research with a strong focus on reciprocality [2]. It is seen as a measure to counter the beforementioned tendencies and potentially enhance the quality and social impact of research [3]. In doing so, Citizen Science can help redefine the relationship of universities to society. Accordingly, it presents a window of opportunity for research libraries to become the single point of contact for Citizen Science across the institution. [4]

Based on the work of the ‘LIBER Workgroup on Citizen Science’ this panel session will outline the work done by research libraries within the field, present case studies and discuss the challenges and opportunities moving forward. It will contain three 20 min presentations.

1) Strategies and opportunities for research organizations and libraries within Citizen Science. Between the autonomy of science and universities’ third mission. This presentation will address the cultural change and leadership needed within research organizations to become successful players in citizen science activities [5]+[7]. (Tiberius Ignat).
2) Research Librarian’s Guide to Citizen Science. Based on the work of SciStarter [6] this presentation will outline the content of the Work Group’s forthcoming publication and toolkit for libraries in order for libraries to enhance scientific literacy. (Simon Worthington).
3) Research Libraries as a Single Point of Contact for Citizen Science. Based on the Broad Spectered Single Point of Contact (BESPOC) [7], this presentation will outline the roles and possibilities for research libraries as a hub for researchers and libraries as well as libraries and citizens. (Dirk van Gorp & Tiberius Ignat)
